I know this article is old, and I know JJ is a Skywalker fanboy, but his statement here infuriates me. Who is in whose shadow here: A.) Star Trek, 5 sperate live-action TV series for a total of 28 seasons of trek. Star Wars, none B.) Star Trek, 11 movies and going. Star Wars 6 and out. C.) Star Trek, has had a genuine major influence on today's technology. Star Wars, influenced a bunch of 30-something potheads to stay in the parents basement and practice Jedi as a real religon. D.) Star Trek, actually have Video Games that requires you to use your grey matter. Star Wars games, Video Games were you just have to hit the fire button real quick. |

What did Orci say so rightly . . . . . . . . . . there are Trekkers but no Warries or Warrers

For horatio
![]() SW is about wars, while ST is about the trek. We have wars here and we don't want them. But a trek through the stars is exciting!

Hmmm, take a look at the top one hundred grossing films worldwide. All six starwars films are on that list. Not a single Trek film there. For the readers of the LA times (the article you posted), a film business company town, Trek is undeniably in the shadow of starwars.
Reading the article, it sounded to me like JJA has acquired a great deal of respect for trek, and was committed to doing his damndest to getting a large worldwide audience to see and respect the Trek world as well. I wish him well, and hope he succeeds.

Once more, we have a topic that brings up what should be a non-existent problem...
What's wrong with liking both Trek and Wars? Why should one be better than the other when they aren't really comparable? I love both franchises, and do not put one over the other. And let's face it, Star Wars games have been better than Trek games (sad fact).

I can see your point jcs23576. I understand how the article could be taken in a certain light however it can be taken another way as well. J.J. is trying not to copy Lucas' work. He is trying to make a Star Trek movie that 1.) is not like anything we have seen before visually 2.) Stronger character driven story that is able to out shine the competition this summer. And 3.) give Trek a shove towards re-vitalization so that it may endure with new stories to tell. It is my opinion that there really is no shadow cast over one or the other. It kind of reminds me of ice cream. Like sci-fi it has many flavors (all flavors are good) but people always go back to their favorite for comfort. Just like Star Trek And Star Wars two different flavors but the same treat.

SW is not Sci-Fi, of course
![]() So it's more like ice cream and chocolate?

It's sci-fi to me. It has spaceships and robots, strange alien life forms...Just my opinion but all that fall into the catagory is science fiction. Besides Ice Cream and Chocolate still go together pretty well.lol

![]() i d say star wars is in the shadow cause trek is ten years older , and it has a considerably bigger universe (altered universes , time travel etc)
