Blast from the past JK. I remember seeing that shortly after it came out- I couldn't decide if it was real or a joke, but some of the cast were really cool. I used to love Robert Vaughn and John Saxon in 1970s movies. And Shad's spaceship with the tits... very funny.

Yes, I do remember it - didn't George Peppard have a ship that seemed to resemble a cow or a bull sitting on the ground? It was kind of like magnificent seven, but in space?

It was Akira Kurosawa's "7 Samurai" for the sci-fi crowd. How many different ways can that film be presented? The original, the western, the space opera, a bug circus. I guess the story is timeless. The strong protecting the weak, because the weak are who really make the world go round. If not for the weak, the strong would have no purpose, nothing to protect. Without the strong to protect them, the weak suffer and perish. And in the end, win or lose, it's always the little guy, the guy nobody else thinks a pif about, who goes on growing the crops and feeding the world. The strong have to cut their losses and go find another farmer to save. Funny how the heroes always leave smiling.

A very common concept in sci-fi, when you think about it. Or a variation of it.

A common enough concept in almost all of literature and theatrical media. It's part of the human condition. Whenever our soldiers are sent to some place like Vietnam, South Korea, Kuwait or Iraq, that's what they, the soldiers believe they're going for. It's never whatever other reason that big governments and greedy politicians might have. To the soldier, he's just going to help the little guy. Sometimes he does, even when he himself loses. And those in power and those with the greed always lose, because the price they cause us to pay, and the price they themselves pay, is always greater than any profit they might see from such a venture. When will they ever learn?

Well, another part of the human condition is believing that fate can be beaten, that history doesn't repeat and that the outcome can be changed. Does it really work that way? Maybe sometimes yes, but often it doesn't. But the idea itself drives a lot of events, especially in films and literature.
