Their looks, or their acting?

I would say acting skills def. You cant have star trek with out good acting.
Its a rule and law in my book for star trek. It makes star trek what it is. An excellent sci fi adventure and saga that thrives. As for looks you still always will have the other crowd that goes by the whether the person is hot if then they will watch the show or movie.

Or if they resemble the characters of the show a little. I think Chris Pine is a great choice for Kirk in terms of looks, but the acting, I'll just have to see how it plays out when the movie comes out next May.

I think acting is much more important. We have to really feel that this is TREK to believe it and the interactions between the characters are of utmost importance. I will want to be able to close my eyes (of course I won't though) and believe that I am really hearing dialogue from TOS.

The better actors they are in their roles, the less their individual differences in apperance will make. Impersonations are great for SNL sketches, but they won't make a good 'reboot' feature film.

Acting. And to this:
I say: Star Trek has been around for a long, long time. The people who will like it? Already do like it. Turn your back on the ones who do gambling for the ones who might, and you might as well just call it quits. The Coca-Cola company learned that lesson in the '80s and learned it hard. Paramount should have learned it already, but apparently they're either too dense or too greedy for the lesson to have gotten through.
