Am I the only one in all of Trek Fandom that actually thought Star Trek V was a good movie?
The whole God metaphor didn't bother me at all, especially since the god turned out being nothing more than a sham. I loved Sybok...so DC Fontana said that Spock was an only child...(never confirmed) Plus the idea that there are still some vulcans who embrace emotion yet aren't quite Romulans was a unique one. It was our first real look at the 1701-A and at some more unique Starfleet military tactics. Plus the opening line by Scotty encapsulates the character so well. "I think this ship was put together by monkeys, I mean she's got a fine engine, but half the doors won't open, and guess whose job it is to make it right!" I never really understood why people disliked the film, outside of it treading on religious ground and the effects being a bit shoddy it was fun and exciting. At least I thought so. |

The opening scene. The whole Paradise City stuff. Miniguns. Horned horses. It was all like Star Wars.

ILM, the company that normally would do the special effects in Star Trek, for whatever reason, wasn't available for the movie so they had to settle with another company that had no experience with Star Trek. So there was a pretty steep learning curve in the FX department. There was also a nasty writers strike during the preproduction phase which hindered things even more.
Overall, I rather liked the beginning. It really did have a feel of being out on the frontier in a place remained relatively untouched by the major galactic powers.

The whole production was plauged with technical probelms, a very inexperienced director.

Probably dipped too much into that "secret ingredient".

As I have said before, it was too mcuh of Shatner wanting to do a large epic "De mile style" film on a Trek budget.
His script got messed with alot before production. Keep in mind the Bakers(the religous folks) had gotten into trouble, Paramount was leery of having a "Evangelist Type" in the film. Between the '88 writer's strike, the loss of ILM for the project, Harve and him butting heads, all this helped bring the film down, in my opinon.
