Yeah, this was brought up elsewhere when the story broke about the Bakersfield filming.

But to that point:

SPECULATION

on who was driving seemed to indicate it was either a girl or young boy. If this indeed takes place in Kirk's childhood, the actor playing Young Kirk is only 12, and that of his older brother is 16. Seems unlikely either would 'own' such a car. Anyone wonder if the boys might have 'borrowed' this vintage roadster for a thrill ride... to boldly drive what no one's driven in 200 years?

But I do remember another fun idea which has an outside chance of being related to this:

WILD SPECULATION

in the episode 'Is That All There Is?' from Tom Hanks' production FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON, Alan Bean, Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon all drive identical Corvettes as a flight crew. Hanks also drove a Corvette as Jim Lovell in APOLLO 13.

The Vette seemed to be highly prized as a muscle/speed car for this pilots, and a highly identifiable status symbol as Apollo astronauts.

Wouldn't surprise me to see Jim Kirk (and perhaps older brother 'Sam') 'boosting' a Vette for a pre-spacefaring joy ride in Iowa. Granted, a slim connection but interesting given the similarities of theme.

They picked a Corvette for some reason, apparently...

If you think about it (as seen in STII:TWOK) Kirk collects antiques and stuff from the past, as part of his childhood maybe he collected cool antique cars.
