I've wondered for years, with the advent of CGI, when someone would decide to do a remake of The Thing. I wondered as much in a conversation last weekend to a friend. Lo and behold, a re-imagined update of the classic 1980s sci-fi horror film is scheduled for release this week!
The website teasers look pretty promising. It seems the new producers took some pains to try to stay fairly true to John Carpenter's settings and Ennio Morricone's decidedly unnerving soundtrack with the 2011 film. The Thing was the first movie that ever actually put a good scare into me and I'm interested to see what goes bump in the night with the new offering. It's not a remake, it's a prequel. 33% on Rottentomatoes is a result than can be expected when a Ron Moore tries to play in the same league as Carpenter.
My favourite Carpenter flick is "They Live" which is basically intelligent trash. It needs this mixture of highest and lowest to work. Like RoboCop it is far better than any political movie produced in Hollywood during the last two decades ('working class guy in a flannel shirt saves the day' is the last thing a Hollywood liberal would come up with) and furthermore it reminds us that sci-fi and satire mix very well ... and that the 80s kicked a*s. ![]() ![]() |

Carpenter's film was a remake anyway, though a good one but on his own he hasn't made a good film in years. His last few films have been utter dreck. He lost his touch a long time ago.
Though Moore's script was supposedly totally rewritten by Eric Heisserer..........................though they must have kept some elements from him if he's credited. Though Moore and Braga were also credited with Mission: Impossible 2 when Robert Towne did a total rewrite as well back in 1999............not sure how crediting technically works. Getting back to the 2011 film - it's a remake under the guise of a prequel. Because events generally can't unfold in a vastly different fashion than in the 1982 film because.................well, they never do.

At one point I was quite excited for this new Thing...but lately, nothing gets me to the movie theater and this movie won't break the streak.

The original Thing From Another World was okay, I have it on DVD. I enjoyed the story "Who Goes There?" much more, and Carpenter's The Thing is my favorite.
If the new Thing is a prequel then so be it; the downside is I guess we know how the movie ends, LOL! Still, it'd be cool to see the drama that happened at Thule before a helicopter flown by "crazy Swedes" showed up at Outpost 31 blazing guns and grenades. |

Gross indeed but not unduly so, imo; it couldn't be bloodless and taken seriously.
I do agree The Thing From Another World had its moments, and the Thing just bursting into the room and the subsequent shock reaction of everyone realizing what just happened was one of them. It was what it was and I can appreciate it for that. The writers and directors did make the attempt to make a decent movie for the time and they succeeded fairly well. |
