I think he's inadvertently set himself up to be mocked by some quarters. That's about as much as can be said at this point.

D'accord.

Star Trek and Batman are two different breeds of film. One of the things that made Star Trek the success it was was the pacing of the movie. To take the second movie and try to slow down the pacing, or make it uber-uber-(did I mention uber?) darker than the predecessor could be a botching waiting to happen.

I think it is natural that this bunch of moviemakers analyzes the success of a movie like Dark Knight and perhaps even picks out and emulates some features.
It is only a bit stupid to publicly talk about it in my opinion, don't tell the crowd how the magic works.

I'm reminded of the review Isaac Asimov did of the original televised Battlestar Galactica, back in the 70s. It started something like this:

A little while ago, a movie came out that was called Star Wars. The expectation was the everyone involved in the project was going to lose their reputation, their careers, and worse of all, money.

But because it was a relative departure from what had gone before, it therefore seemed new and fresh to the audiences. And so, surprise! It made money. It made buckets of money.

And so Hollywood producers, realizing that something different would make money, decided to go out and do something different too. The same something different..."

I would agree. They are not really comparable. For some reason, I have more the X-Men to X-Men 2 path in my head, rather than the darker Nolan-verse of Batman.

You still have the escalation of the stakes, but with the pace and the energy kept and also managing to flirt with an allegory or two.

But Batman has superceded X-Men as the franchise on everyone's lips - so it's not surprising he's using that film instead as some sort of inspiration.

I want the sequel to have the same ingredients that the last film had TOS wasn't all dark and gloomy all the time if you know what I mean.

The first one wasn't dark enough? Kirk's Father is killed...Spock's Mother is killed...and then Vulcan gets destroyed.

Well, I have mixed feelings on whether people should acknowledge things that have influenced their films.

Gene Roddenberry was happy enough to talk about what fed into Star Trek, George Lucas is happy enough to talk about what fed into Star Wars and Raiders etc and a lot of the time the audience is aware of the influences themselves.

Talking about it openly beforehand as one of the possibilities could fend off accusations of 'ripping off' later. Not always, but sometimes getting in first helps!
