I doubt the industry likes to experiment too much when it comes to big budget movies. There are people in Hollywood working around the clock to analyse people's taste and come up with scientific formulas to target specific audiences. No doubt, the most interesting audience is the largest one likely to go out and buy stuff (toys) from a movie. Movies like Star Wars are obvious money-makers and don't even need a lot of advertising.
But it must be quite a challange to do a successful Star Trek movie. The hardcore fans are few in numbers these days, they are spoiled, fastidious, and quite diverse. Their taste is as unique as Star Trek itself, but you can't succeed without them.
