Was just rewatching the first episode On Demand...the blackout starts from somewhere in the Northeast, likely between New York and Boston...possibly right here in New England...or somewhere just off the Massachussetts/Rhode Island coast.
Has to be some kind of general energy dampening field that encompasses the Earth, otherwise SOME kind of alternate energy source would work, as some have mentioned in various posts and reviews...wind, water, even hamster power...
The little handheld/pendant devices either negate the dampening field locally or provide a power source not affected by the field.
I might also surmise that there are no more thunderstorms on this future Earth since electrical activity has been impeded.
I still feel the show owes more to "The Postman" than "Hunger Games"...
