He didn't want to get his boots wet. If you watch the outtake again, the ledge was at the scene of Pike's interrogation with standing water at the bottom. It was dry near Pike and dry on the other side where they were filming. The ledge made a little bridge across the river of water. It's simply logical he didn't want to get his boots wet.
I actually own a pair of Romulan boots (from the film) and they are only waterproof up about 3-inches. After that, water can easily get in and flood the boots.
