The probe was of no danger to us. It was just coming to the end of it's life, so they smashed it into the Moon's south pole as a final experiment. Thanks to the still orbiting portion of the mission, they are going to be able to examine the composition of the lunar surface, and tell us a great deal about the formation of impact craters. They'll also be looking for evidence of sub-surface ice. You may remember we did something similar by smashing a probe into a comet a couple of years ago...
I'm sure they'll move it before building Lake Armstrong on the moon.
