If only the Timelords hadn't been erased from history at the end of the Time War, this alternate timeline wouldn't never have been allowed to exist!

But seriously, I don't have a problem with the new Trek making major changes to the backstory of the characters or worlds, I just wish this movie would have been a total re-imaging like BSG and not one that needs the whole 'alternate timeline' crutch. Instead of just strating over, why did the writers feel the need to tell yet another time travel story in which history gets re-written by some villian bent to wiping out some adversary? If this story is supposed to be more accessible by the general public and one that doesn't rely on past series, why start with a story that requires viewers to know or even care about post-Nemesis Spock?
