David Mack wrote the Destiny trilogy. He's written several well-received Trek novels, is the main creative force behind the novel-only series Star Trek: Vanguard about a TOS-era space station, and co-wrote the DS9 episodes "Starship Down" and "It's Only A Paper Moon."
The only thing remotely fanboyish about Destiny is the connection of a few survivors of the NX-02 to the origins of the Borg, but the idea was inspired by an image of the crashed ship in a Ships of the Line Calendar on an alien planet in the Gamma Quadrant. But how that happened was explained in the trilogy and fits quite well within the context of the story...
