Picard's age and own sense of mortality was something that was supposed to be a subject in Nemesis (similar to Kirk's in WoK).
Nemesis is simply a case study in why you should not let a "fanboy" do the story. John Logan's work for Gladiator was awesome. It's too bad that he seems to have missed the mark for Nemesis.
I still think Stuart Baird did a great job directing the film.
