Interesting since in her Dreadnought the bad guys were out of control Starfleeters who wanted to use unrestrained military force to solve the Federation's problems with its neighbors.
I've found that in her books its a sense of "Yes there ARE going to be finding people out there who don't like us... So yes we need to be able to defend those things we cherish... BUT the power we use to defend those things MUST be carefully managed and used in great restraint lest we become that which we fear."
But that is content worthy of continual discussion since only by questioning ourselves do we keep from blindness.
Ever notice that many of the same people who want variety in life frown very hard on vanilla... But without Vanilla, Baskin Robbins just wouldn't BE 31 flavors.
