Easy: Cars in the 60s had synchronized manual transmissions, allowing you to shift gears without rev-matching first.

Cars in the 20s did not. You had to be at the right rpm to shift into the next gear, or you would suffer.

If you think driving a stick TODAY is hard, try it on an unsynchronized tranny!
