Personally, re: the whole 'enlightenment' thing in Star Trek:
There were some areas in which it was and is a noble and achievable goal, specifically in the spirit of inclusiveness of all human beings in humanity's greater aspirations. Some areas where it really just stretched credibility too far, i.e. positing the Federation as a quasi-Communist society that works. Corruption happens in every system of government, and history has shown us plentiful examples of that when that kind of government goes corrupt -- and it inevitably has everywhere it's been attempted -- it's the harshest and most brutal brand of corruption.
"Now I did a job -- and got nothin' but trouble since I did it, not to mention more than a few unkind words as regard to my character, so let me make this abundantly clear: I do the job... and then I get paid. Go run your little world."
