Whilst it may have been easy to create a story that would engage Trek fans, it would be nigh impossible to create a new film based on TOS, TNG etc that would be easily accessible for new-comers...

I'm pretty sure it wasn't there. Easter Eggs is one thing, but putting in things that belong to a different franchise that's run by a different studio is a no no.

Actually I'd say that the lightening near Vulcan would've been the black hole opening for Spock's ship to come through. That would be what they detected.

Why can't it just be "AU" for "Alternate Universe".
That way if there is a spin-off TV series it can still be used, but if they stick with movies it still fits as well.

I'd say the most commonly accepted theory of time travel and how it affects people is the one where-in everytime a choice is made, it creates an alternate univerise that runs in parallel with another...
