It's a shame we never got the see the captain's yacht of the D

It was supposed to be used for "Samaritan Snare"

And between the tedious Picard/Wesley dialogue and idiotic Pakled storyline, the yacht would have been the instant high point of a terrible episode.

Well, the Pakled storyline is as "idiotic" as something like Trouble With Tribbles. Picard's and Wesley's chat reduced the whizkid aspect of Wesley, made Picard a bit of a mentor for him who tells him what matters really in life and last but not least it laid the foundation for the superb episode Tapestry.
I also consider the prosaic shuttle interior as the appropriate simple background for this talk.

'Samaritan Snare' isn't the best ep overall, but for me the Picard/Wesley element is the better half.

And yes, when having a two-hander conversation sometimes keeping the backdrop plain is smarter so the audience will focus on the conversation.

TTWT was charming. The Pakled storyline was just dumb and a waste of time that added nothing of value to anyone's character.

They should have focused entirely on the Wesley and Picard plotline instead in a more interesting scenario, possibly as a bottle episode with them both trapped somewhere and depending on each other, which would soften Picard's character and humanise Wesley.

Personally if I was writing TNG, Wesley would not have been a whizkid, but just a troubled kid with massive potential who needed a father figure. Ultimately after developing their relationship for a few seasons (and that between Beverely Crusher and Picard) I would reveal that Picard is in fact Wesley's father
