TOS Pasts

Now we all know that the newest movie will show the pasts of Kirk and Spock with childhood and all but what about some of the other character pasts:
McCoy - His devorce and daughter, Joanna.
Chapel - Her missing fiance ...well missing before she sign on to Starfleet
ETC.

Also, will we see T'Pring and Carol Marcus?

I understand that production is almost done and not every story line will be fulfilled but as a fan of TOS you got to wonder, What about the others?

First off, welcome Misoka! You bring up some good possibilities.

re: McCoy, I doubt they'll explore much of his early life beyond mentions of it, but not a lot of actual screen time.

I think the safest bet in your list might be Carol Marcus, since she exists in this film's reported timeline somewhat prominently in Kirk's private life (not necessarily his professional career), and then nowhere else again until ST II with it's important revelation.

T'Pring's a possibility though that might get time consuming to delve into. So far we have no clue about Chapel's involvement or lack thereof. We'll have to wait and see on it all. But nice first posting, very relevant discussion topic!

Yep, good ideas :D
We'll see the past of the past... the beginning of the beginning...

As far as McCoy, his divorce or daughter were never mentioned on film. But it was in the writer's bible for TOS. Cannon on that is if-y.

Chapel, very possible!

Carol Marcus, again very possible!

T'Pring, no. because in "Amok Time" Spock states he has not seen her since the age of 7.

A few months ago, on trekmovie.com, it was stated that Carol Marcus was in an early draft of the film's script, however, she is not in the shooting script.

Very interesting. Carol Marcus was Kirk's love affair back in the day so it is a possiblility. I know we were discussing this in another thread but what about Sybock. He could show up somewhere. I know he's not very popular but he was Spock's half brother and might be shown during the childhood part of the film. Just a possibility.

I'd like to see more on McCoy's past about that, but I believe the focus of the movie's story is supposed to be mainly on Kirk and Spock. I do think that'd be a good element to the movie, though.

That was just in the books? I know I read it somewhere, but I guess I also assumed it to be on film. It just seemed like that to the trek crowd, McCoy's divorce had been common knowledge. I could swear though, that I'd heard something about that mentioned on film. Are you sure that subject wasn't addressed in "The Man Trap"? I can't remember for sure, but if memory serves, then I think that some mention of his marriage was made in that episode.

True it would be nice for a little more McCoy focus but it will most likely be Kirk and Spock like Southern Spockette said.

Oregon_Coast_Trekkie 02-27-2008 06:30 PM

I wouldn't hold out hope for pasts on anyone other than Kirk or Spock.
