Digital Converter Box-Do You Like it?

I don't have cable or satellite television, only a regular (non-digital ready) television set that i've owned for many years and a plug in antennae, i've recently hooked-up to a digital converter box. Star Trek reruns are currently playing on a local station, but i can't watch them, because i'm not receiving a signal. I really hate this new technology, i don't see it as an improvement. It is in terms of sound and picture quality, but the signal breaks up too easily, if i get it at all. Well, at least i still have my Dvds.

Well, for those people that do not have a Hi-Def TV or Cable/SAT, all the converter box will do is allow you to still get your local TV stations after the transition this month.

You can still use a regular antenna with the box. Plus, you get the cool new feature of a program guide for free.

...of course you are limited to about 5 channels. But, with the crap on TV now a days, 5 is more than enough.

I still like to have local channels in the event that the satellite signal is lost, but this digital switch has really hindered the amount of channel I can get. I gotta be honest, I prefer analog. At least it degrades gracefully and you can still see the picture.

We have one of the boxes hooked up to my Mother's t.v.. It is pretty unreliable, skippy and jerky. The digital signal frequently conks out and leaves my Mom with nothing to watch. We have sattelite on the living room t.v. and except during heavy thunderstorms, the reception and picture are flawless.

What kind of antenna? The usual rabbit ears? They will work fine so long as you are close enough to the towers etc etc etc. Keep in mind that most digital stations have moved to UHF so a different kind might be needed. In case you are looking around keep in mind that there is really no such thing as an "HDTV" antenna. Also, not all converters are created equal and some are better at handling breakup than others.

You can go to antennaweb.org to see how close you are to the transmitters in your area and what kind of antenna you will probably need. It will tell you which stations are VHF and which are UHF and everything else needed to get up and running.

Speaking of my dislike for the digital converters, we're getting hit with bad weather tonight and we can only get one channel in decently. When we switch over to analog, we can get at least three.

Why the hell did they make it a LAW to switch over to Digital? That was probably one of the most stupidest laws ever written. Leave us our damn analog and go play with your digital self, Government.
