Chekov Questions - Against canon?

Beside not having the Davey Jones Monkee Do (I like the curly hair better), does his character really belong in this movie seeing that he was not introduced in TOS until season 2?

It depends on how flexible you are with Chekov. I can certainly accept him being on the ship during the Khan incident and therefore covering the issue in TWOK with Khan recognizing him when he wasn't in the episode. But unless they manage to at least imply that Chekov is the brightest freshman cadet ever, I don't see how they're going to cover the fact that he's supposed to be a good 12 years younger than Kirk.

Yes, I would agree it depends on how strictly you interpret his first appearance. His first day on ship, or just a rotation on to bridge crew. Different people have different answers.

Koenig had a cool story at a convention when I was a teen. Kahn remembered him in ST:II because he "Never forgets a face" but Chekov was not in the Kahn episode on TOS so he explained that he was in a bathroom when Kahn came in so he met "Kahn in the Can". It got a big laugh back then.

I'm pretty sure that the entire complement of original characters was assembled in this reboot flick because that's what the general public expects to see. The general public, and all their dollars, outnumber the canon nazis by about a gazillion to one. And if the general public expects to see Chekov, then Chekov they shall have.

IMO, etc.

That's true, I mean Chekov might have had a lead on time in episode, but why was Chekov chosen to remain through the movies, why not one of the other Navigators...or create a whole new Navigator. Oh wait, they did in TMP...her name was Ileeia...and we saw what happened to her. Always a shame when an attractive person dons the wrong color...

Ahh...you didn't bite my bait about attractive people dying...

BTW, the actress appears in another film called Mega Force...the film is absolute crap, but you get to see Persis Khambatta with hair...long, beautiful hair.

Well, Perhaps Chekov is like Wesley Crusher (or to be more accurate, perhaps Wesley Crusher was like Chekov).

But yes, only the most hardcore fans who are about strict adherance to canon will be up in arms about Chekov. Most casual fans and even just the genreal populace know that Chekov is one of TOS's main characters. They would wonder where he was. They would want to know where the "Nuclear wessel" guy is.

In real life Pine is 9 years older than Yelchin, so it's not that much of a stretch.

Remember, we aren't seeing these actors play their characters in the same timeframe throughout the whole movie. We have no idea how much time passes from the first time we see them till the movie ends.

In otherwords, I think we need to see how they explain Chekov in the new movie. I'm betting that one of the first things brought up to JJ and the writers by their advisors was the whole Chekov/Kahn thing.
