CBS confirms Star Trek: Enterprise on Blu-ray in 2013

No new post in this column for over a year? I suppose I can fix that.

Hmm... my vote would be on the third pair of pics for possible cover artwork. I like the minimalist design.

Seemed inevitable enough. Might help guage reaction for the likes of DS9 and VOY as well.

Oooooh! The X-Files is coming to Blu Ray as well? I wonder how that would look and whether they would retain all the bonus material on the existing sets..........

I never did get into the X-Files.

Oh, I was into it a lot. The first 5/6 seasons were the best and it declined after that (and also I felt from moving away from Vancouver to Los Angeles in 1998 location wise) but still at it's height around Seasons 3-5............it was good stuff.

It's the easiest to convert XD

Think I'm through buying DVDs for the time being, I have been tempted to get the remastered TOS dvds but am going to hold off for a few years at least, no doubt the next platform will be out by then leading to another series of format conversions!

I remember for what seemed like the longest time WB declined to give Babylon 5 the DVD treatment, citing that they perceived a lack of consumer interest in the series. It turned out that people had stopped buying the VHS tapes and laserdiscs because they had been led to believe that a DVD release was imminent.

Though I've heard about the next platform, I think it's a bad idea. It may only hasten the end of physical media by causing even more people to get frustrated and switch to bloody streaming.

I also wouldn't bank on ST (or a lot of TV shows for that matter) making it to the next platform. To redo TOS, they would have to re-render the CG effects all over again at a higher resolution (and that's assuming CBS Digital even saved their work; maybe they did, maybe they didn't). To redo TNG, they would have to rebuild the show from its photographic elements just as they're doing now for BluRay. And it still remains open whether DS9 or VOY will even get an HD remaster at all.

In general, a lot of what's on DVD will never make it to BluRay. And the same will go (even more so) for the next platform. I would say if you're been tempted to go HD on TOS, it's probably safe to assume BluRay is it. That or streaming.

(Now for ENT, I think the fact that I never bought the DVDs should 'probably' speak for itself. However I'm thinking this may be the time that I finally give the whole series in general another try at viewing. Switch my Netflix subscription from DVD to BluRay. And if I did decide to own this for whatever reason... hey, at least I never bought the DVDs)

Roysten,

You can get the dvd's of TOS-R relatively cheap sometimes on the likes of Play.com/Amazon compared to what they were. I don't know how the next format will go but like Sam says, it might not automatically be moved onto it.
