So, I'm in the box office...

Sometimes working at a movie theater can be quite humorous...This guy walks up to me asking what a particular movie was rated. I told him [R] and he goes, "Oh! Regular audience?!" I did not know what to say, but then just went ahead and told him that [R] stood for "restricted" and that if you are 17 or under, must have a parent with them. He looked at the sign and then laughed at me. Wow...

Under a rock, he had been hiding.
Clueless to the ways, he was.
Or perhaps, his laugh, dawned on him too late it was, and in irony and ignorance, laughed at himself, he did.

Indeed. A bit embarrassed his son was.

I can think of two explanations

He was messing with you and he has a quirky sense of humor

Perhaps he is from another country, with a different rating system.

I'm inclined to think it's the first.

Working master control in a Spanish TV station a while back, I would often get calls from viewers who did not speak English. Typically the calls would get routed to me just because the folks at reception didn't understand my job well enough to even know who was the best department for dealing with the issue at hand. Which was kind of a nuisance since I would have my hands full keeping us on the air. But anyway, if the caller was speaking in Spanish he was frankly out of luck.

When you said "No Espanol" they would often switch to English (if they could) and ask if you didn't understand Spanish. Then they would laugh at you like you were an idiot and hang up on you. Apparently whatever they needed wasn't that high priority.

But now who's the real idiot for not understanding what country they're in?

He was Italian. So, it was the second. However, he did tell me he had lived here for quite some time.
