They dress uniform does indeed look indeed strongly Soviet. I guess it is the colours or shall I say lack of colours and the hat. Well, at least Chekov will be happy with it.

They made some very strange decisions, I fear...

As far as I remember there were grey uniforms or clothing in the last film (I seem to recall the shuttle officer in grey, as well as Pike during the bar scene) so it wouldn't appear inconsistent with last time.

Call me old fashioned but I rather like the notion that hats/caps are still attached to a future service's more formal uniforms. I think it finishes off a service uniform nicely. Anachronistic, sure, but better than skants and one piece's that don't smuggle the budgie.

They didn't have shoulder flaps in the last movie.

Oh you're right. Now I fear the worst.

(I can't wait for actual news to break at this point.)

These Red Army style uniforms go hand in hand with the reuse of the brewery set. Anti-futuristic sci-fi is an oxymoron.
I am also not surprised about the militarization of Starfleet which unlike in Meyer's movies serves no dramatic point. As I always say, the general principles of Trek are slowly undermined.

There okay for the Mirror Universe scenario.

The hats won't work on certain alien heads.

Looks like this is shot on set. There's a big light in the background.
