What happened in 1986?

Does anyone know what happened to the phaser that Chekov threw to interrogator on the USS Enterprise in 1986? I could have sworn there was a story following that incident somewhere. Or even a fan fiction.

Someone pressed the wrong buttons, it exploded near the nuclear reactor, the Enterprise exploded and WWIII broke out. And, guess what, we can blame a Russkie. ;)

I imagine nothing happened, at least nothing major. Had they reverse engineered it and figured out it's secrets, even if only in part, that would have had drastic effects on their timeline and they would not have returned to the same 23rd century they left. Perhaps they looked at it, and since it wasn't working, assumed it was just a prop used by a mentally ill Russian and that was that.

Someone sold it on eBay for $100. The collector was then mugged by a wino who vaporized himself with it.

It's in a small wooden crate, sitting in a large vault filled with lots of other wooden crates in Area 51.

The Giants won the Super Bowl in 1986!!!

It sat in a police unsolved cases evidence locker for nearly seventy years and then was lost when World War III erupted. During the Post-atomic Horror, it was found by salvagers and later sold & dismantled for scrap metal (its power pack had long since drained since then).

Obviously it was retrieved shortly after by Temporal Agent Daniels.

If it was reported as missing from inventory. Could have gone down with the ship at Genesis for all they know.
