In the movie, if Kirk wasn't on administrative suspension and was assigned to a ship (probably not the Enterprise), what would his job have been? In TOS ep. Court Martial, we learned that Ensign Kirk reported Lt. Commander Finney for leaving a switch open to the atomic matter piles when they changed duty shifts. This makes me think Kirk would have been an engineering crewman. I'm wondering what his training and specialty was at the academy.

I was just thinking how silly we all are here wracking our brains trying to make sense of the relationship of Alternate Universe with Prime Universe, debating which is better, etc. Why cann't we just accept ST'09 as a movie adaptation of a 60's TV series. Dozens of these are done every year. Since the success of "The Untouchables," its become a virtual cottage industry. Every cartoon, video game, popular novel, and tv series has been turned into a block-buster film. Television series have been a big player in all of this, everything from "The Addams Family," to "Lost in Space." Of course, movie adaptation is a rather vague characterization, it can mean several things. It can be a continuation of an existing story, like it was in "The X-Files" movie, or a moderized re-do, like "Lost in Space." Sometimes these are done with the actors from the series and sometimes not. I have a much easier time understanding ST'09 as just a different kind of movie adaptation of a tv show, than as something more, like a new Universe of Trek.

As part of the new special features in the Next Generation Motion Picture Collection, are a series of interviews with Brent Spiner titled "Data and Beyond". This is a thread to discuss those series of interviews that appear with each film in the Motion Picture collection.

I was re-watching "Nemesis" last night, then watched the Spiner interview included on that disc, he mentioned that originally "Nemesis" as conceived by Screenwriter John Logan was an Alternate Reality story, it was to involve the encounter of Picard and Data with the Alternate Reality versions of themselves. A little like how in the new film Old Spock encounters his Alternate Reality version of himself. The idea was rejected by Berman who reworked the idea into the form we see in the film, where Picard meets himself in the clone, Shinzon and Data meets an earlier version of himself in B-4.

I just figured no forum would be complete without a thread like this. For the 'unlucky' among us who had to return/replace their brand new ST09 DVDs, to tell/relate about the hoops you had to jump through (or what-not). Or even just to say the dreaded words above that too many otherwise-helpful people seem to delight in saying. :001_tongue:

Anyone? Anyone? (Bueller? Bueller?)

I'll start. :)

I got the 'tin bookcase' edition from FYE, because I love the stylish minimalism of the artwork. 2nd disc stopped playing at the 'film composer' featurette. Didn't even bother checking the movie itself after that. Haven't had a chance to check my replacement disc yet (I'm at work).

What annoyed me was the store clerk casually tossed aside the replacement I'd picked out, pulled another copy off the shelf behind her... then proceeded to open it and inspect the discs before making the exchange. Popped the discs out with way too much force (I have to assume, since it typically takes me forever to pull them out -the very first time- with this type of lock), and then handled them in that way-too-casual "I do these everyday" manner that's likely to get them soiled.

Anyway, that's a first for me. Everything I've ever returned in the past, I've always walked away with a brand new (unopened) replacement. Tried to act gracious, but I think I betrayed the fact that I was rather peeved.

Oh, and the shiny case has some minor scratches on it (which is why I had picked out my own replacement before approaching the counter). Wouldn't be worth whining about if the disc itself works this time... unfortunately.

No one ever said you get everything you pay for in a commercial society. :001_tongue:

Just in case this forum closes down, which is looking more than likely since we have hardly seen the mods in month, I set up a new Star Trek Forum. It is very similar to this one except there are not many members yet. I put all the movies in the one forum section instead of having a different one for STXI.

Other than that, everyone is welcome to come and try it out. Visually, it still needs some work but when you get there you will see a few people you already know :)

I'm also very open to other ideas and ideas for improvement. So please come along and try it out.
